HAWAII......Kumu Hula Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewett....teaching the dance through words and imagery
The essence of Hula....a learning experience at the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival 2001, Hilo HAWAII

Photographer's notes:

It was billed as a 'Hula continuing education experience', a supplemental event of the annual world class hula competition held annually in Hilo Hawaii each April, the weekend following Easter.

Attended by premier Ancient (Kahiko) and Modern (Auana) dance troops (Halaus), guided by Hula Master Teachers (Kumu Hula).
MERRIE MONARCH
The competition lasts three days with nearly 1/4 as many dancers as there are attendees at the small Edith K. Tennis Stadium which seats but 5,000. A ticket for this annual event is as hard to get as a Spanish Dubloon....with best vantage seats going to the Hula Elite and major program sponsors....yet on the nights of competition, there is only one class of attendee...people as ONE, sharing a common love for what is "Hawaii"..."the Dance!"
HULA MASTER FRANK KAWAIKAPUOKALANI HEWETT'S TEACHING
The Hula Competitions are schedule in the evening hours--but during the day, a 'teaching' was afforded to any who might wish to explore morefully the depth and breadth of what makes Hula such a revered representation of the 'Aina ' ... the heart, soul, and spirit of the Land of Aloha!

The Hula Teaching.....
As staff photographer for the Hula Supply Center in Honolulu, I was invited to chronical a "teaching" by Hula Master Frank Hewett at the Hilo Community College. It was an assignment that ended in an unforgettable experience in Hula and a better understanding by the students and myself of what Hula is and what it means to this land and its people.

Seasoned professional photographers often have a hardness about them. Accustomed to taking control of a photoshoot and the subjects portrayed, insensitivity and rudeness often results....this shoot was not at all like that. Immediately I was overwhelmed with a sense of reverence; an unspoken commission not to intrude on or impede with something sacred I was invited to witness and record. The pages that follow, chronicle the teaching, the learning, and the experience of what it is like to be guided into the journey of Hula the dance under the guidance of a Hula Master....You are invited to inquire how you may be a part of a future opportunity to sit a while and learn from the wisdom of a Hula Master.
